Can you buy live lobster, crab or other live animals with EBT?
Short answer: Shellfish yes, most live animals no. Live animals are not eligible, with exceptions for shellfish, fish taken out of the water, and animals slaughtered before pickup.
USDA lists live animals as ineligible, with three exceptions: shellfish, fish that have been taken out of the water, and animals slaughtered before they are picked up.
So live lobster or crab is covered, while a live chicken or a pet is not.
The USDA memo also says SNAP cannot pay for slaughtering fees or separate charges for processing meat, poultry or seafood. A live crab or lobster that is steamed hot for you is a hot food and is not eligible.
