How do I apply for SNAP in California?
Short answer: Through the California state agency.
In California the program is called CalFresh. USDA's state directory lists the state's own website and application page, linked at the top of this page. Only the state agency can decide whether you qualify.
Can I use EBT at restaurants in California?
Short answer: Yes, in some cases.
California is on USDA's list of states that run the Restaurant Meals Program. It lets SNAP households where everyone is elderly, disabled or homeless use EBT at approved restaurants. Each restaurant has to be approved, so ask your state agency which ones take part.
Does California restrict soda or candy with SNAP?
Short answer: Not on USDA's list.
California is not on USDA's list of states with an approved SNAP food restriction waiver. Under federal rules, soda and candy are eligible foods there. This can change if the state asks for a waiver.
For decisions about your benefits, contact the California state SNAP agency.
