How do I apply for SNAP in New York?
Short answer: Through the New York state agency.
In New York the program is called Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). USDA's state directory lists the state's own website and application page, linked at the top of this page. Only the state agency can decide whether you qualify.
Can I use EBT at restaurants in New York?
Short answer: Yes, in some cases.
New York is on USDA's list of states that run the Restaurant Meals Program. It lets SNAP households where everyone is elderly, disabled or homeless use EBT at approved restaurants. Each restaurant has to be approved, so ask your state agency which ones take part.
Does New York restrict soda or candy with SNAP?
Short answer: Not on USDA's list.
New York is not on USDA's list of states with an approved SNAP food restriction waiver. Under federal rules, soda and candy are eligible foods there. This can change if the state asks for a waiver.
