Who Accepts EBT

Can you buy hot food with EBT?

Short answer: No. No. SNAP benefits cannot be used for food that is hot at the point of sale, at any store.

USDA lists foods that are hot at the point of sale as ineligible for SNAP. It is the temperature when you buy it that counts, not what the food is.

USDA's policy memos give examples of hot foods: chicken that has been broiled, fried, barbecued or roasted, shrimp that has been steamed or fried, crab or lobster that has been steamed, soups, stews and chili, pizza, and hot coffee, tea or cocoa. A hot slice from the pizza counter is out. A frozen pizza you bake at home is ordinary food.

The same food can be eligible if it is sold cold. See the pages on cold deli food and rotisserie chicken.

There is one exception. In some states, the Restaurant Meals Program lets elderly, disabled or homeless SNAP households buy prepared meals at approved restaurants.
